I really like it, the art is nice and the character designs are neat, and I like the song too :D

As for what's going on… hm.

Extremely Convoluted Interpretation!
My guess is that he misses someone who now lives far away, so far that they're oceans apart. They still talk through emails and letters: "Within the words and letters, in the gaps of the waves". Despite this continued communication though, he feels like they're growing apart, like the other person is "merely receding away".
The constant reference to the ocean/sea both symbolizes their distance (oceans apart), and how the singer feels like he's drowning and is hopeless to keep their relationship from fading. "Drinking up the bottom of the sea in one breath" and "bubbles that can't be spat out" remind me of choking, and the latter quote could also be referring to emotions as bubbles, in that they constantly rise but he can't get them out. Also, people who feel hopeless often look up, like at the sky - "I could merely, in the midst of quiverings, glance at the sky".
Which, brings me to what it might mean about laughing at the song. Maybe the "song" is a literal song, or just a letter or something, but either way, it could be a confession. He's confessing to that person that he's afraid their relationship is drifting apart. He asks the person not to laugh at the confession, but also not to worry. He won't cry over the situation ("As for tears, there's no way, no way"), and if the person just has to stay where they are, away from him for whatever reason, it's okay and they shouldn't come back for his sake: "Begone, if you'll end up going away, Please don't come back here now".

He still wishes for the other person to "cling on some more now" though, since even if he accepts he may never see this person in person again, he still doesn't want their relationship to fade away.

A Much More Literal Interpretation!
He is literally on a ship at sea. Something when wrong, stuff exploded, and there's ashes falling into the water so he's "being coated with ashes". SOS signals were made, since the ship was going down, hence the mention of SOS in the song. The singer is underwater drowning, and these lyrics are all of his final thoughts.
He accompanied someone on the ship, and this person managed to escape on a life boat. He can see the words written on the life boat as it drifts on the waves -"within the words and letters, in the gaps of the waves". This life boat is the "mid-sea train" the other person is receding on. Receding refers to how the person is either going farther away in the life boat while he drowns, he's sinking so fast he starts losing sight of the boat, or his vision is receding so he can't see the person any longer (or maybe all the above).
I imagine this person on the life boat is unaware that he's currently dying, and his death is what "you'll end up finding out." This will likely upset the person, and he envisions them "in remains of the dreams, your weeping". He warns the person that once they find out he died, "please don't come back here now". Maybe they'd try searching for his body or something, but he doesn't want them returning to such a dangerous place in the middle of the ocean.

To explain some more lyrics, physically, all he can manage to do his look at the sky, though, being underwater, he'd see the sky through the water's surface, which would look like "skies of swimming light". He can't even cry because his tears would just mix with the water anyway. The mention of a midair stroll could be referring to how being underwater can give you the feeling of floating in the air.

I love interpreting stuff, convoluted lyrics are what got me into Japanese music xD (especially VOCALOID). Back to your animation though, like I said, I really like it :D

Hm, I wonder if the visuals were slightly inspired by the game "Limbo". They look great!
The story does confuse me a bit though. I assume the kid was scared and it was dark so he mistook his mother for a monster but... having flashlight eyes, I don't see the darkness excuse holding up .-.
Maybe the kid is just crazy. When in doubt, blame crazy.

Funny you should say that, I originally named the kid Limboid because the original style was going to be in silhouette, but I changed it because I couldn't play with perspective so much in silhouette. Also the flashlight eyes thing is only in the credits as a cool effect. They do not actually have flashlight vision. (These damn credits have given me nothing but trouble.)
